Mother of Pearl for Men: What It Means and How to Wear It

Mother of pearl is white that moves. Turn your wrist and soft pinks, greens and silvers slide across the surface, then disappear again. Men have worn it for centuries without always noticing: on shirt buttons, cufflinks, dress studs and watch dials. Today a mother of pearl bracelet or necklace brings that same quiet light into everyday wear, and it's long been linked with prosperity and calm.

Below we cover what mother of pearl is, what it has meant, how it differs from pearl, and how to wear it well.

What Is Mother of Pearl?

Mother of pearl is the inner coating of certain shells, mainly pearl oysters, abalone and freshwater mussels. Its proper name is nacre. The animal lays it down to smooth the inside of its shell and protect its soft body, adding a little more every year.

Look at nacre under a microscope and you'd see something like a brick wall: tiny flat plates of calcium carbonate, the same compound as chalk, held together by a natural protein. Those layers are thinner than a wavelength of light, so light bouncing between them splits into color. That's the shimmer, and it's why mother of pearl never looks quite the same twice.

It's also soft, around 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which is why it's cut flat and polished rather than faceted. The English name is usually traced to the medieval Latin for "mother of pearls", because the shell is what makes them.

What Does Mother of Pearl Mean?

Most of what mother of pearl stands for comes from two places: the sea, and the slow way it builds up. As with any stone, treat these as tradition and belief rather than fact.

Prosperity

This is the meaning our own pieces carry: mother of pearl is believed to bring prosperity. Shells were among the earliest forms of trade and money in parts of the world, so the link between shell and wealth runs deep.

Calm and patience

Nacre is made one thin layer at a time, and that's become a symbol in its own right: steady progress, patience, and keeping a level head while things take shape. It's a meaning many men find easy to wear.

Safe return

Because it comes from the sea, mother of pearl has long been tied in folklore to water and journeys, and it's been carried as a charm for a traveler's safe return.

Protection of what matters

The shell's whole job is to protect what's inside it, and to turn an irritation into something beautiful. That makes mother of pearl a natural symbol for looking after the people close to you.

A Material Men Have Always Worn

Mother of pearl might look new on a clover bracelet, but it has one of the longest histories in men's dress of any material.

  • Thousands of years of inlay. Around 4,500 years ago, craftsmen in ancient Mesopotamia set cut shell into panels such as the Standard of Ur. Later, Chinese and Korean lacquerware, Ottoman doors and Indian furniture all used it to catch the light.
  • The button. For much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a good shirt meant mother of pearl buttons. Whole towns grew up around cutting them, including Muscatine in Iowa, once known as the pearl button capital of the world.
  • Black tie. Mother of pearl dress studs and cufflinks have long been a classic choice with a dinner jacket, white against black.
  • The watch and the knife. It turns up on watch dials, pocket knife handles and fountain pens: the small, well-made things men keep for years.

Wearing it on the wrist or at the neck is simply the next step. It's a material with a gentleman's past and a relaxed present.

Mother of Pearl or Pearl?

They're the same material in two forms. A pearl is a loose bead of nacre that grows inside the shell, layer around layer, usually around something that's got in. Mother of pearl is the nacre lining the shell itself, cut into flat pieces.

So a pearl is worn whole and round, and mother of pearl is shaped: into clovers, ovals, squares and inlays. Both have the same soft glow, but mother of pearl gives you it in a cleaner, flatter shape that sits close to the skin.

If it's real pearls you're after, our pearl pieces use real freshwater pearls. Read about why men wear pearl necklaces, learn how to tell if pearls are real, or browse our men's pearls.

Real Mother of Pearl or the Look of It?

Natural mother of pearl is beautiful but delicate. It scratches against harder stones and metal, and soap, sweat, perfume and chlorine slowly dull it. Thin pieces can also crack if knocked.

Our White Clover pieces use a pearlescent white inlay designed to replicate the depth and richness of natural mother of pearl, set into each clover and sealed with a scratch and fade-resistant finish. You get the soft white and the meaning, in a piece you can put on every morning without worrying about it, at a fraction of the price.

Buying natural mother of pearl elsewhere? Real nacre feels cool to the touch, its color shifts as you tilt it, and you can often see fine growth lines that aren't perfectly even. Plastic looks identical from every angle and feels warm and light. Some shell is dyed for stronger color, and some thin pieces are backed with foil or glued in layers, so ask what you're buying.

How to Wear Mother of Pearl

Choose the metal you already wear

Gold makes the white look warm and creamy, and it's the richer of the two looks. Silver keeps it crisp, bright and a little cooler. If you wear a steel watch, go silver; if your rings and chains are gold, stay gold.

Wear it against dark colors

White shows best against black, navy and charcoal, where it lifts the whole outfit. On a white T-shirt it's subtler, more about texture than contrast. Both work; just decide which you're after.

Pair it with onyx

Black and white is the easiest stack there is. A white clover next to a black one gives you contrast without a single bright color, and our guide to black onyx for men covers the other half of that pairing. For what the clover shape itself stands for, see our guide to clover bracelets and necklaces, and for every other stone in our range, our guide to gemstone meanings for men.

Dress it up like a dress stud

Mother of pearl has always belonged with tailoring. A white clover bracelet under a shirt cuff, or a small pendant with an open collar, carries that black tie history into a wedding, a dinner or a night out.

Mother of Pearl Bracelets and Necklaces

Every piece below comes in gold and silver unless we say otherwise.

The White Clover Stone Bracelet

Our most popular mother of pearl piece, by a long way. The White Clover Stone Bracelet sets a pearlescent white inlay into a row of four-leaf clovers, each framed in silver and joined by beveled oval links, with a snap-proof clasp. It's also available framed in 18K gold. See every stone and metal in our clover stone bracelets.

The White Clover Stone Pendant

A single 15mm clover with fine filigree edges, on a Cuban chain at 20in. The White Clover Stone Pendant in 18K gold is the smallest and most versatile way to wear mother of pearl, and it's easy to wear under a shirt or over a plain T-shirt.

The White Clover Stone Necklace

For more presence, the White Clover Stone Necklace spaces white clovers along the whole chain, joined by beveled links, at 19.5in. It sits around the collarbone and looks best with an open neck. It's also available in silver. Browse the rest in our clover stone necklaces.

The Iced Gemstone Bracelet and Necklace

Here mother of pearl plays a supporting role. The Iced Gemstone Bracelet sets red and amber crystals in radiant and baguette cuts, with oval and square-cut mother of pearl between them to calm the color, plus 18K gold clovers and a ring of AAA-grade stones. It's also in silver. The Iced Gemstone Necklace brings the same design to a 19.5in chain, in gold or silver. See more in our gemstone jewelry collection.

How to Look After Mother of Pearl

A few simple habits keep the white bright for years.

  • Keep it dry. Take it off to shower, swim or train. Soap, sweat and chlorine are what slowly dull nacre and wear down a finish.
  • Put it on last. Perfume, aftershave and hand cream should go on first and have time to dry. Acids, even mild ones like vinegar, eat into natural shell.
  • Give it its own space. Harder stones and metal links can scratch it, so store each piece in its own pouch or compartment.
  • Wipe, don't scrub. A soft, dry cloth after wearing is all it needs. Keep natural mother of pearl away from ultrasonic cleaners, steam and heat.

Mother of Pearl as a Gift

Mother of pearl makes a gift with a reason behind it. Pearl is the traditional gift for a thirtieth wedding anniversary and June's birthstone, and mother of pearl carries the same associations in a form a man will actually wear. Its links with prosperity and patience also suit a new job, a graduation or a milestone birthday.

The Clover Bracelet Gift Set pairs a White Clover Stone Bracelet with an Onyx Clover Stone Bracelet in a CRAFTD gift box, also in silver. For more ideas, see our gift sets.

Mother of Pearl FAQs

What does mother of pearl mean for a man?

Mother of pearl is traditionally linked with prosperity, calm and safe return, ideas that come from the sea it forms in and the slow way it builds up. Take those meanings as tradition rather than fact. For most men it works as a quiet reminder of patience, or of a person or moment that matters.

Are your mother of pearl pieces real mother of pearl?

Our White Clover pieces use a pearlescent white inlay designed to replicate the depth and richness of mother of pearl, sealed with a scratch and fade-resistant finish. Natural shell is soft and sensitive to water and perfume, so this gives you the look in a piece made for everyday wear, at a fraction of the price.

What's the difference between mother of pearl and pearl?

They're made of the same material, called nacre. A pearl is a loose bead of nacre that forms inside the shell, while mother of pearl is the layer of nacre lining the shell itself. Pearls are worn whole; mother of pearl is cut and polished flat, which is why it suits inlays, buttons and dials.

How can you tell if mother of pearl is real?

Real mother of pearl feels cool at first and its color moves as you tilt it, with soft pinks, greens or blues and fine, uneven growth lines. Plastic looks the same from every angle and warms up quickly in the hand. Some shell is also dyed or backed with foil. A jeweler can confirm what you have.

Is mother of pearl a good stone for men?

Yes. Men have worn it for centuries on shirt buttons, cufflinks, dress studs and watch dials, so it has a long history in menswear. White is easy to wear, it brightens dark clothes, and it works in gold or silver.

Can you wear mother of pearl in the shower?

It's best not to. Natural mother of pearl is dulled by soap, sweat and chlorine, and even sealed pieces keep their finish longer when they're kept dry. Take it off to shower, swim or train, and put it back on once you're dry.

Should you wear mother of pearl in gold or silver?

Gold gives the white a warm, creamy look and suits tanned skin and darker clothes. Silver keeps it crisp and bright, and suits men who already wear a steel watch or mostly silver. If you're unsure, choose the metal you wear most.

How do you clean mother of pearl jewelry?

Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, or a cloth barely dampened with plain water if it needs more, then let it dry fully. Avoid perfume, vinegar and other acids, and never put natural mother of pearl in an ultrasonic cleaner or steam it.

A Quiet Kind of Light

Mother of pearl has been finishing men's shirts, cuffs and watches for generations. Wear it at the wrist or the collar, in the metal you reach for every day, and let it catch the light when you move.
